Info Window is a website with the intent to educate people about the spread of fake news and misinformation. It includes links to resources, including a student-run podcast.
WHY DID WE CREATE INFO WINDOW?
Social media has the perfect conditions to fuel the spread of misinformation. We found that many people are being fed information via echo chambers based on the content they view and the influencers they follow, and they seem complacent in staying in them. This can cause people to be even more polarized in their political view. Misinformation through online and social media platforms have been linked to domestic terrorism (e.g., Tarallo, 2019; Piazza, 2020). With a large proportion of college-aged students using some form of social media, misinformation and polarization are important issues, specifically, students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. As members of the CBA Scholars Academy, we created Info Window to serve as a tool to educate our local community about fake news/fact checking and open their windows to the truth.
